You Are a Lighthouse
You are on a sight-seeing cruise off the Atlantic coast that is about halfway complete when an unexpected storm pops up. It is nearing dusk and the wind and waves quickly disorient the captain of your small boat. The storm has taken out all GPS and other navigational controls.
What do you do?
You start straining to see something along the shore that can guide you to safety on land. Between the cloud cover, the quickly approaching nightfall, and the driving rain you cannot see much at all. And then you see it...the centuries-old lighthouse with it’s rotating beam is barely visible but you are able to point the captain in the right direction and he safely returns your vessel to the shore.
Many times in our lives we are looking for someone to be our lighthouse and provide us with that direction and guidance to take us safely to our destination. This is a good thing, but I also want you to take this idea and use a process called inversion. Inversion is looking at the opposite of what you want to have happen, challenging the status quo, and evaluating things from a different perspective.
I want you to invert this situation and think about yourself as the lighthouse. You may not realize it but you can be (and in many instances already are) the beacon that others are looking to for direction and guidance.
The most obvious example of this is if you are a parent with children. They are soaking up everything you do, or don’t do, and they are trusting that you are guiding them to the shore. Maybe you are in a situation at school or work where the majority of people are making poor decisions. You are worried that if you go against the majority by sticking to your principles and values you will look silly or be ridiculed. But what if there is one, or two, or many people in your social circle that don’t really like the decisions they are making, but they are waiting for someone to be that lighthouse guiding them to solid ground?
You can be that lighthouse!
STOP worrying about what other people think. STOP thinking, ”What if people see me and don’t like me?” Use inversion and start thinking, “What if people see me and are inspired?”
Lighthouses don’t go out and rescue people. They simply stand on solid ground. Their light shines so that others can create a path on their own and find their way along their journey using the lighthouse for direction, guidance, and hope. It doesn’t even matter if you want to be a leader...YOU ARE A LEADER! There is someone, somewhere watching you for guidance.
Let your light shine and be the direction, guidance, and hope that someone is searching for!
