Do you want to be a hero? Life will give you plenty of opportunities.
No matter how much you try, you are never going to be able to go through life pain-free.
I am not advising you to go around intentionally injuring and harming yourself. But no matter what you do and how hard you try to avoid it, suffering will find you.
Holocaust survivor and author of Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl, called it unavoidable suffering. Whether it is losing a loved one, getting fired from a job, having someone ruin a friendship, or not getting into the college of your choice. Life is going to happen to you.
But Frankl also said that everything can be taken away from a human being except for one thing: the power to choose.
You always have a choice.
You may not like that choice. That choice may not get you want you want. You may think that choice isn’t going to lead to happiness. But you always have a choice.
The movie Cool Runnings tells the story of the bobsled team from the Caribbean island country of Jamaica that participated in the 1988 Winter Olympics.
It is a neat story that represents the idea that you can beat the odds and do things even when others laugh at you and tell you they are impossible.
The Jamaican team made it to the finals and was having a great run when the bobsled crashed and careened down the course before coming to a stop short of the finish line.
While the Olympic spectators, athletes, and coaches waited to see what would happen, the driver told his teammates, “We have to finish the race.”
The four men climbed out of the overturned bobsled, picked it up and hoisted it above their shoulders, and carried it down the remainder of the track and crossed the finish line.
Has your bobsled ever crashed?
Have you ever had something bad happen when everything seemed to be going well?
Have you ever been laying on the track wondering what you are supposed to do because your chance of winning is gone?
Carry your bobsled.
Pick yourself up, gather your bearings, lift your bobsled and finish the race.
Don’t blame the bobsled, don’t blame the course, don’t blame yourself.
Live courageously. Live fearlessly. Know that suffering will find you.
Always carry your bobsled and finish the race!
